RPG fans on Xbox and PS5 are experiencing a true golden age for the genre right now. The likes of Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 are some of the greatest games ever made, and now Dragon’s Dogma 2 is here to try to give them a run for their money. Dragon’s Dogma 2 reviews are now emerging for Capcom’s highly-anticipated adventure, and they’re already hailing it a masterful achievement.
It really does look like Dragon’s Dogma 2 is destined to be among the best RPG games around on Xbox and PS5, as we kick off with Eurogamer’s review of the forthcoming open world game. Awarding the game a full 5/5 rating, Eurogamer expresses that “this is genuinely a game like no other […] because the only other game like it is the original Dragon’s Dogma, a game that now feels irrelevant due to the improvements the sequel has made to every aspect of the original formula.” Additionally, it says that the new Xbox game and new PS5 game has “limitless possibilities.”
Joining Eurogamer is VGC, which also gives Dragon’s Dogma 2 a perfect 5/5 score. Comparing it to Larian Studios’ smash hit Baldur’s Gate 3, VGC says that “Dragon’s Dogma 2 is second only to Baldur’s Gate 3 in how faithfully it recreates the organic chaos of a D&D session.” Not only this, but it also claims that the game is “the most vital RPG since Elden Ring.” Now that’s high praise, indeed.
In a far more critical 7/10 review, PCGamesN says that “Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a faithful reimagining of Hideaki Itsuno’s flawed yet ambitious action-RPG”, but cites the inconsistent frame rate as a major issue. If you didn’t know, Dragon’s Dogma 2 runs with an uncapped frame rate on consoles, rather than opting for Performance or Fidelity modes. In our experience with the game, we’ve found it typically hovers around the 30-40 FPS mark, targeting beyond that in less dense interiors.
As things stand, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is boasting incredibly high average scores on Metacritic. It’s sitting at 87 on PS5, 88 on Xbox Series X|S, and 90 on PC.
While you won’t see a scored review from us here at The Loadout, we’ve been deep in the Dragon’s Dogma 2 trenches and will be sharing our thoughts and opinions on the game over the coming days.
The Dragon’s Dogma 2 release date is extremely close, and it certainly looks to be one of the best games of the year. You don’t need to wait to play a tiny bit of it, either. In other gaming news, the Max Payne remakes are heading into a “production readiness” stage with an Alan Wake 2-sized budget, and Bungie’s Marathon is making some huge changes to crafting characters.
