Destiny 2’s new activity for Season of the Wish, The Coil, is extremely good. You go through escalating encounters killing enemies, grabbing shards and drowning in more loot than you could imagine. But there’s one very weird and bad thing I discovered during this process, and I couldn’t tell if I was being trolled by an Ahamkara, or if it was an actual game bug.
The issue in question is a Wish you can buy from Riven with Shard currency, it allows you to sometimes apply 50 scorch stacks to an enemy with Solar damage, extremely good for a season that is mostly focused on Solar, which is what many people are running. It’s a Tier 3 perk so it’s expensive, but you can grab it for your last 1-2 cycles, usually, if it appears.
The problem? When you apply scorch to enemies, you will almost always…catch on fire yourself. You will start burning with scorch stacks going up and down from maybe 60-90 or so as you fight, but once you stop? You will keep burning, and you can only recover through heals you may or may not have. If you don’t heal, you will be burned to within an inch of your life. Scorch itself cannot kill you, but it can leave you with 1 HP and any shot from any enemy will finish you off. This happened to me on my Precious Scars Titan and the only thing I could get around it with was constant restoration heal on kill (in hindsight I probably should have just…stopped using Sunshot. But I can’t! It’s so good!).
Some were speculating that this was a cursed Ahamkara Wish with two sides, as Wishes tend to be. Oh you want to apply scorch damage to enemies? Well, aren’t you your own greatest enemy? *sets you on fire.*
But this is not what’s happening. I started to figure it out when I heard that sometimes this scorch thing was crashing people’s games, and that…none of the other Tier 3 Wishes had some sort of regretful hidden downside, as on point and funny as that may have been, given the context here.
Tom Farnsworth, Bungie season lead, has confirmed that it’s a bug and it is on their radar. No sneaky burn debuff intended. It’s not clear when this will be fixed, but unless you have some sort of crazy healing build I would absolutely never buy this. It’s survivable in some of the encounters, but the worst is actually during the transition parts where there’s only a few enemies, but if you catch on fire there are few if any ways to put it out with not enough enemies to heal on kill with. Then any stray shot will kill you.
It’s a bummer, because it’s a great perk, but definitely wait until it gets patched. And besides, there are enough insane solar artifact perks right now where you don’t even need it to be a flame-spewing god.
