Bungie appeared to be a little caught off guard by its Final Shape delay, not having planned, sellable content like the 30th Anniversary Pack to drop in the middle of the six month season. Instead, they promised Into the Light, a nebulous, two-month bit of content that wasn’t explained, other than it was for both new and veteran players.
Now, technically Bungie has revealed Into the Light, albeit details will come in three separate livestreams over the next three weeks, indicating there may be quite a bit to talk about, and this content may be more substantive than anyone was picturing, myself included.
The reveal of the first image from Into the Light above has fans buzzing, namely that people think there may be enough clues that this may end up being some sort of horde mode defense activity, something Destiny fans have been requesting in some form or another for about a decade. Whether that pans out or not is unclear, but there are some interesting things in this image, and some clues that at least could lean in that direction. So, what to notice?
The Tower is Fixed – After being damaged the entirety of Destiny 2, it appears that the Tower has finally been fully fixed. This has led to an idea that Destiny has made a literal “Tower Defense” mode, beating back waves of enemies as they dry to damage our just-rebuilt Tower.
Pyramid Hive Delivery Mechanism – How are Hive in The Last City which is almost never breached? (well except that one time, and that other time). The answer seems pretty clear, that an invading force of Pyramids has dropped them off, and even set up Pyramid architecture within the city, which is what I have to assume is what the Hive is pouring out of. We should also assume these are Xivu Arath’s troops, though I cannot imagine we actually fight her in this.
Friendly Turrets and Blue Laser Fence – More horde mode evidence, as you tend to set up stationary turrets when you’re fending off waves of things and you’re not moving around a level. That’s a generalization, I suppose, but you get the idea. These are slapped with the Vanguard logo and would be the first time we have custom friendly turrets on our side. Also in this photo you can see some sort of blue laser fence thing, and it wraps around all the turrets and Guardians in this photo. The idea this is some sort of “protected zone” that must be defended, or that you guard to activate the turrets, or something like that.
Reprised(?) Weapons – Two of the weapons in the picture here appear to be Midnight Coup and Blast Furnace, the famed Leviathan hand cannon and Black Armory pulse rifle, respectively. Plus an Arrivals-style Vortex sword. However, if you look closer, it appears that these weapons many not literally be those guns, but ones reprising their model. They may look the same and be the exact same archetype, but at the very least I’d guess new names and many new additional perks.
I think the dream here is that this could be a true horde mode in Destiny 2 and one that rewards reprised versions of some of the best, still-vaulted weapons in the game. We will know more over the next few weeks, but that’s the current hope, at least.
