Engagement, engagement, engagement. That’s all we ever hear from live service games, and there is no other game trying to get players more engaged at all times than Destiny 2. Now, with a vastly expanded six month season, that’s going to prove tough.
Bungie is doing a few things for the second half of the season, like the just-announced Prophecy dungeon weapon refresh. But past that and whatever Into the Light is, there isn’t much.
Bungie also announced the fact that the ten transmog synthweave bounties you can do per season, per character, will be reset, given that the season is now double the length. But this is not true for Deepsight Harmonizers, where we have six appear in the battle pass every season, but with no new battle pass, it’s just six in six months here.
You want engagement? Just…stop with the gating here.
I have said this a million times but transmog should not be for sale, not for armor you’ve earned in the game. In a perfect world, sure, you’d get something and it would auto-unlock, but if we have to do an “engagement” middleground, get rid of the seasonal cap entirely and stop selling synthweaves in the store.
Despite doing every single transmog bounty on every single character every season, I have dozens and dozens and dozens of pieces that will never be transmoged unless I pay hundreds of dollars. Not that all of them are worth it, but if you are looking for something, anything to do in Destiny for a long term grind, opening this up, when it should have just been open in the first place, is a good start. I cannot imagine synthweaves sell enough to keep this idiotic cap in place. There’s also precedent for this as eventually Bungie realized selling individual copies of shaders was incredibly dumb, switching eventually to permanent unlocks. Just because something is sold in the store doesn’t mean it needs to stay there forever if it’s a terrible idea. Which this is.
The second thing is something I’ve been thinking about in the wake of Mara’s Wishes that we’re now seeing weekly. You do some sort of task to get one red border weapon from Last Wish per week, despite not raiding. I think there could be some sort of variant of this for grinding in general.
First, again, Deepsight Harmonizers should not be in a battle pass. That is indirectly selling power with the paid ones that are in there, and it’s bad.
But I am wondering what it might be like if Xur sold a weekly bounty not for a stupid exotic cipher, but for a Deepsight Harmonizer. You could figure out new objectives for these quests to make them more than just the very dull cipher quests, but it would be something to log in and work for every week/every two weeks if you are not someone that has everything crafted all the time. I’m not sure whether this would be just a literal Harmonizer or a red border weapon. Probably the Haromonizer? But maybe not say, giving out a raid weapon in a raid you haven’t done. Not sure how often you can pull that trick.
Yes, I am Mr. Crafting Is Bad For The Game, but this is the reality we live in, and I think a weekly/bi-weekly quest to get a Harmonizer instead of just waiting around for six per season would be something at least somewhat compelling to work toward.
No, I am not saying these are terribly interesting grinds, but it is better than nothing, and nothing is what Destiny 2 currently has most of the time at present. People hate artificial caps and timegating, and I think this would help with that in at least these two smaller areas of the game.
