Destiny 2 has just launched a series of Wishes as weekly content for the next six weeks of relative downtime. They are a somewhat exhausting list of Dreaming City challenges, but with promises of great fortune, like red border raid weapons without ever having run a raid.
But there’s one prize that Bungie has not really explained very well, its list of paid Destiny expansion exotics that you can now grab with weekly tokens, even as a F2P player. My pal Fallout recently discovered this for himself and made a good video about the topic:
To summarize, Bungie gave us a list of exotics that you can grab for tokens:
- Hunter: Speedloader Slacks (Legs), Cyrtarachne’s Façade (Helmet), Triton Vice (Arms), Mothkeeper’s Wraps (Arms)
- Titan: Abeyant Leap (Legs), Arbor Warden (Chest), Pyrogale Gauntlets (Arms), Cadmus Ridge Lancecap (Helmet)
- Warlock: Ballidorse Wrathweavers (Arms), Swarmers (Legs), Cenotaph Mask (Head), Briarbinds (Arms)
Okay, cool, I have all those, so I’m not doing this. But what they’re not advertising is the fact that these are expansion exotics where, in this apparently one-time-only opportunity, players who did not buy the Lightfall expansion can get their choice of six of these exotics over the course of the Wishes quests.
This also applies to all platforms, as getting “paid” expansion exotics would still let you use them through cross save on other platforms, you just can’t run the actual activities. But there was previously no way to get these exotics without owning Lightfall. So, this means that free-to-play players can get a bunch of useful Lightfall exotics without having to suffer through Lightfall itself.
However, this gets even more convoluted, as because this is true, and F2P players can get any of these, you can’t be a free-to-play player to use some of them. Stasis exotics like Cadmus Ridge Lancecap (Titan) and Ballidorse Wrathweaves (Warlock) require the Stasis subclass, which requires the Beyond Light expansion. Meanwhile, while you don’t have to buy Lightfall for Lightfall exotics, you do have to buy Lightfall to use the Strand subclass which is the whole point of exotics like Cyrtarachne’s Façade (Hunter), Abeyant Leap (Titan) and Swarmers (Warlock). So yes, this is…kind of goofy, and I can see F2P wasting Tokens on something they can’t actually effectively use. My cynical side says that they may be hoping this sells DLC.
I maintain that Destiny should be making these darkness subclasses free, though “make things free” is not really on their radar right now, outside of these specific lists of exotics, about a quarter of which can’t be used because something else isn’t free. Bizarre situation, but at least for some of these, a good grab for F2P players. I’d recommend Mothkeeper’s, Pyrogale and Briarbinds, if we’re avoiding the locked subclasses.
